"I Bear Record of the Father", part 2

If Jesus bears record of the Father through the Light of Christ, how do you use it? What do you need to know before you can use it? In Moroni 7, Mormon gives an excellent sermon on the Light of Christ. I believe an extensive quotation is necessary.

5 For I remember the word of God which saith by their works ye shall know them; for if their works be good, then they are good also.
6 For behold, God hath said a man being evil cannot do that which is good; for if he offereth a gift, or prayeth unto God, except he shall do it with real intent it profiteth him nothing.
7 For behold, it is not counted unto him for righteousness.
8 For behold, if a man being evil giveth a gift, he doeth it grudgingly; wherefore it is counted unto him the same as if he had retained the gift; wherefore he is counted evil before God.
9 And likewise also is it counted evil unto a man, if he shall pray and not with real intent of heart; yea, and it profiteth him nothing, for God receiveth none such.
10 Wherefore, a man being evil cannot do that which is good; neither will he give a good gift.
11 For behold, a bitter fountain cannot bring forth good water; neither can a good fountain bring forth bitter water; wherefore, a man being a servant of the devil cannot follow Christ; and if he follow Christ he cannot be a servant of the devil.
12 Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually.
13 But behold, that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God.
14 Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.
15 For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.
16 For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.
17 But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.
18 And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged.
19 Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ.

Those verses refer to “a man being evil” three times. I would advise you to not seek to apply that label to anyone else but yourself. That “man being evil” is you. You are in a fallen state and your very nature is what the scriptures call “carnal, sensual, and devilish”. (Alma 42:9-10) According to King Benjamin, you, in your current natural state, are "enemy to God" (Mosiah 3:19) and, as Mormon just taught, you can do nothing good. Therefore you must follow Christ in order to do anything good. The keys to knowing if something comes from Christ is given in the above quotation. I will leave it to you to find them and use them.

D&C 84:45-46 says, “For the word of the Lord is truth, and whatsoever is truth is light, and whatsoever is light is Spirit, even the Spirit of Jesus Christ. And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.

You can see that the Light/Spirit of Christ gives light and truth to literally everyone. But if you want to be enlightened, you must hearken to whatever Christ is telling you to do. Enlightenment is conditional upon your obedience. Remember that hearkening is more than just hearing. You get to decide whether or not you will be full of the light that is offered to you from moment to moment.

As an aside, D&C 88:6-13 teaches some truly marvelous things about the Light of Christ. I think you should read those verses but I won’t discuss them here.

As Lehi’s family was journeying in the wilderness (before they crossed the sea), at some point the Lord told them, “I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led.” (1 Nephi 17:13) Interestingly enough, Lehi’s family was given something specifically meant to lead them through the wilderness: The Liahona. Look in 1 Nephi 16 to find out out what they eventually learned about that miraculous tool:

27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were written upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives.
28 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them.
29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things.

You will notice that the workings of the Liahona is awfully similar to how the Light of Christ functions in your life. I think it is fair to say that the Liahona is, at least to some degree, a physical manifestation of the Light of Christ. In Alma 37, Alma makes some great commentary to his son, Helaman, on the Liahona and its similarities to the Light of Christ.

38 And now, my son, I have somewhat to say concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball, or director—or our fathers called it Liahona, which is, being interpreted, a compass; and the Lord prepared it.
39 And behold, there cannot any man work after the manner of so curious a workmanship. And behold, it was prepared to show unto our fathers the course which they should travel in the wilderness.
40 And it did work for them according to their faith in God; therefore, if they had faith to believe that God could cause that those spindles should point the way they should go, behold, it was done; therefore they had this miracle, and also many other miracles wrought by the power of God, day by day.
 41 Nevertheless, because those miracles were worked by small means it did show unto them marvelous works. They were slothful, and forgot to exercise their faith and diligence and then those marvelous works ceased, and they did not progress in their journey;
42 Therefore, they tarried in the wilderness, or did not travel a direct course, and were afflicted with hunger and thirst, because of their transgressions.
43 And now, my son, I would that ye should understand that these things are not without a shadow; for as our fathers were slothful to give heed to this compass (now these things were temporal) they did not prosper; even so it is with things which are spiritual.
44 For behold, it is as easy to give heed to the word of Christ, which will point to you a straight course to eternal bliss, as it was for our fathers to give heed to this compass, which would point unto them a straight course to the promised land.
45 And now I say, is there not a type in this thing? For just as surely as this director did bring our fathers, by following its course, to the promised land, shall the words of Christ, if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise.
46 O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness of the way; for so was it with our fathers; for so was it prepared for them, that if they would look they might live; even so it is with us. The way is prepared, and if we will look we may live forever.

Are you not journeying in the wilderness right now? Are you not hoping to get beyond this vale of sorrow into a land of promise? Follow the words of Christ that are given to you through His light that is offered to you in every moment. If you find yourself tarrying in the wilderness and not traveling a direct course, just exercise your faith in Christ and look and live.

The Doctrine of Christ is beautiful and much larger in scope than you might have previously imagined. If Christ has offered to you His witness, I believe it is important to receive that witness in its fullness in order to progress through all of His doctrine. “For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift.” (D&C 88:33) Let Jesus bear record of the Father to you. He has prepared the way so that you might live.
